The Ultimate Checklist for Planning a Destination Adventure Elopement

So, you’ve decided to ditch the traditional wedding and head off on a wild adventure elopement instead? Awesome! There’s nothing quite like saying your vows in a stunning, natural setting with nothing but the wind in your hair and the person you love by your side. But, let’s face it—planning a destination adventure elopement has its own set of challenges, right? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with this laid-back, but thorough checklist to keep your day stress-free and epic.

1. Pick Your Dream Destination

Whether you’ve always dreamed of hiking to a mountaintop, standing in the middle of a desert, or saying “I do” by a secluded waterfall, the first step is choosing a destination that speaks to you and your partner. It’s your day—make sure the location reflects that!

Things to Consider:

  • What season will show off the best scenery?
  • How hard is it to access (Are you up for a hike or prefer something closer to the car)?
  • Will you need any permits for the ceremony or photography?

2. Get Those Permits in Order

Some spots—especially the really popular ones—require a permit for both your ceremony and photography. Be sure to check the local regulations early so you’re not scrambling last minute.

Pro Tip: Many national parks, for example, have permit forms right on their website. It’s an easy process, just make sure you do it in advance!

3. Hire an Adventure-Loving Photographer

Now, you’ll want someone who not only knows their way around a camera but can also handle a hike or two. Adventure elopement photographers (like me!) are experienced in capturing those true-to-life moments in any kind of terrain, and trust me, those epic shots are worth it.

What to Ask:

  • Have they shot in your chosen location before?
  • Are they comfortable with any hiking or traveling required?
  • Can they help with location scouting?

4. Book Your Travel and Stay

Now for the fun stuff! Lock in those flights, car rentals (4×4, anyone? lucky for you we have an Overlanding vehicle so no location is off limits), and cozy spots to stay. If your elopement is off the beaten path, look for accommodation that’s close to the location, so you don’t have to rush around on the day of.

Key Details:

  • Do you need to rent any special equipment for your location?
  • Are you flying in during the busy season? If so, book early!

5. Plan Your Day (But Keep it Flexible)

While the beauty of eloping is that it’s far less stressful than a traditional wedding, you’ll still want a rough idea of how the day will unfold. Think about timing for the ceremony, travel to your location, and—if you’re after golden hour shots—the best time for those perfect lighting moments.

Timeline Tips:

  • Allow extra time for hiking or travel.
  • Plan around sunrise or sunset for the best light (trust me, those moments are golden for a reason).

6. Choose Your Elopement Team

Even if you’re keeping things low-key, you might want to bring along a few key people like an officiant, a hair and makeup artist, or a florist. Bonus points if they’re also up for a little adventure! Remember, if you’re in Colorado you can self-solemnize! Which is why it’s a great option for an adventure elopement.

Think About:

  • Is your officiant comfortable outdoors?
  • Can your hair and makeup artist create a look that will last in the elements?

7. Pack Like a Pro

Adventure elopements can come with some unpredictable weather, so you’ll want to pack for all possibilities. Layers are your best friend here—think warmth and practicality (without sacrificing style, of course). And don’t forget essentials like snacks and water!

Packing Essentials:

  • Layers (the weather can change quickly).
  • Sturdy shoes for walking or hiking.
  • A light snack and plenty of water to keep your energy up.

8. Prepare for the Unexpected (Go With the Flow)

Mother Nature has her own plans sometimes, and things might not go exactly as you expect. But honestly? That’s part of the adventure. Whether it’s a surprise shower or an unexpected wildlife encounter, lean into it—these are the moments that make the best memories.

Things to Plan For:

  • Weather changes (pack a cute umbrella, just in case).
  • Allow for extra time if you’re exploring a new area.
  • Be ready to pivot if needed—it’s all part of the story.

9. Personalize Your Adventure

Even though you’re in the middle of nowhere (or close to it), you can still make your elopement day feel personal. Whether it’s writing your own vows, bringing along sentimental items, or creating a post-ceremony celebration (hello, picnic or campfire!), find little ways to make the day yours.

Ideas:

  • Write your vows ahead of time for a meaningful exchange.
  • Bring along a small item or heirloom to incorporate into the ceremony.
  • Celebrate with a private picnic, champagne toast, or sunset meal.

10. Bring a Backup Camera (or Hire a Videographer-me!)

You’ll want to capture every bit of your adventure elopement, and while photos are amazing, consider adding a videographer to the mix. Whether you want sweeping drone shots or intimate videos of your vows, having both photo and video gives you a whole story to relive. Conveniently, I happen to know a great videographer who knows my style and me, my wife!

11. Celebrate Your Way

There are no rules when it comes to how you celebrate after your elopement. Whether you head straight into another adventure or curl up with a glass of champagne at your cozy Airbnb, do what feels right for you both.

Post-Elopement Fun:

  • Have a picnic or campfire celebration.
  • Take a mini-honeymoon and explore the local area the next day.
  • Enjoy some quiet time, just the two of you, and soak it all in.

Planning a destination adventure elopement is all about embracing the freedom to celebrate your love, your way. With this checklist in hand, you’re ready to embark on an unforgettable journey that’s all about the two of you. So pack your bags, grab your hiking boots (and maybe a bottle of champagne), and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!

If you’re ready to start planning your destination elopement and need a photographer who’s as excited about the adventure as you are, reach out! Let’s create something unforgettable together.
